What is a "Rehome" Belgian
Shepherd?
A "rehome" is in the care of their breeder or a foster
home working with their breeder. The breeders of these Belgians have
chosen to take responsibility for the pre-placement evaluation,
rehabilitation (when needed), new family screening, and continued support
for the Belgian adopted and breed in general. The breed's Rescue program
is NOT involved beyond a possible referral.
Rehome Belgians should have been evaluated by their breeders for all health and behavior needs
including having these needs taken care of to complete resolution. Often
these dogs have been in stable, known environments but for many reasons
(relocation, family circumstances, death, financial, etc) they could no
longer be cared for by their owners. A Rehome can also be a retiree. A "retiree" typically has always been in the care of their breeder
and often has been raised and trained by their breeders. For many reasons
this dog will no longer participate in their breeding programs, competition or
other activities. It is in the Belgian's best interest to retire with a
family where they will be the only dog (or one of a few) obtaining much
more one on one attention. Some of these Belgians are titled champions, at
times with
other performance or working titles... in addition to having often
been a significant contributor to the breed, hopefully, carrying forward
improvements in breed versatility
and stability.
Any health, structural or behavior problems should be
disclosed to you prior to placement. All skills, idiosyncrasies, dietary
needs and care recommendations should be provided in writing to you by the
breeder along with a written contract, including a spay or neuter
agreement (a rehome, depending on the circumstance, may not require
altering). The breeder typically will charge a fee for either rehome
or retiree. All questions and details are to be discussed directly with
the breeder involved.
